Show
your work- 10 ways to get discovered is a book is filled with advises, quotes
and stories.
It
offers ten transformative rules for being unlatched, free-handed, generous,
courageous,
productive,
and being discovered.
When
I selected this book to read, the title drew me! I am an aspiring Actor/film
maker, I felt this
book would be the best guide to me on this my career
path because I am at that point where no
one knows who I am. Just so you
must know, Austin is one of my favourite writers, this is the
third book of his
I am reading, his writing power is just awesome! This is a book I would
recommend to every aspiring web content creator, writers, artists, and many
more, who are still
hiding under that shell or worried about how your artistic
content can be discovered. The book
covers 10 brilliant ways you can share your
creativity and of course, get discovered. They are
named:
You don't have to be a Genius
Think
process, not product
Share
something small everyday
Open
up your cabinet of curiosity
Tell
good stories
Teach
what you know
Don't
turn into human spam
Learn
to take a punch
Sell
out
Stick
around.
I
enjoyed number three the most, -share something small everyday, I practically
read that part
first, and I felt it was It was directed to me. Almost in
an accusing manner that made me think,
“wait, hold up a little, why are you
not sharing this gift of yours? " not to go all deep into this, but,
I
will summarise this chapter for you, "if you are talented, don't keep it
inside. This part of the
book practically tells you to put out your work
frequently, and you will start drawing people who
would love your content to
you.
I
also enjoyed number seven, so I guess that’s my best! Which is -"
Don't turn into human spam".
It's so clear that we have human spams in
every profession. "They don't want to pay their dues,
but they want their
piece right there, and now" Let me give you an example, in Austin's
book,
"The writing community is full of lame-o people who just want to be
published in journals, even
though they don't read magazines that they want to
be published in" , hmmmm It’s the kind of
quote that makes you
chuckle but also makes you furrow your brows at the point that was made.
To become that writer that you aspire to be, you need to read books, read
everything you can!
remember you want hearts not just eyeballs! if you want
fans, then be ready to be a fan first.
Sounds interesting eh? More like
if "you want to be accepted by a community; you have to be a
good
citizen of that community". Now let me sum up this part with "If you
want to be noticed, you
have to notice.
Austin says you should shut up and listen!
Now, the part that put a shocker in my heart was the number one-
You don't have to be a Genius.
Austin says you should be an Amateur. Do you
know what's common about being an amateur,
you make mistakes, but do you
realise that those mistakes makes you grow? If you want to be
that known
artist, be ready to look ridiculous at first. Don't be afraid, start somewhere,
learn from
your mistakes, and grow!
This book is all about why generosity trumps genius. Its about
being noticed, its not about self-
promotion, its basically self discovery-
letting others into your affairs and making them notice you.
I
checked up some reviews of the book online, and here’s what Amazon has to say, with a 5-star
rating:
“In his New York Times bestseller- Steal Like an Artist,
Austin Kleon showed
readers how to unlock their creativity by “stealing” from
the community of
other movers and shakers. Now, in an even more forward-thinking
and
necessary book, he shows how to take that critical next step
on a creative
journey of getting known"
I feel like I am going to bore you right now, because if I go on, you won't get
this book to read, I wouldn't put out every detail here, just for
you to find this
book and read!
You
know what, let me conclude with this part of the book. Learn to take a
punch, the eight part, where Austin says; if you are ready
to be known, then
you should be ready for the good, the bad, and the ugly. The more
people come
across your work, the more criticism you'll face, but he
says how you can
handle these punches is to Relax and breathe, strengthen
your neck, roll with
the punches, protect your vulnerable areas and keep your
balance.
Stop
worrying and start sharing!
Show your work! is a 4.9 / 5 for me. Thank you so much Austin
Kleon

Age discrimination- Too Young For That position.
Hello there! It's been a minute! How has your April been? I honestly must say that I have had mine being very tired and filled with lots of school
works, and I sincerely do apologise for the break. I will make sure I post as often as always hence, and I thank you for sticking with me still.
Today, I want to
quickly address something that might seem quite personal and obviously interesting. Please grab your coffee! and read on.
Have you ever been in that official room or walked into an interview, or even in your workplace where
you were told you are too young for certain positions and your opinions don't matter? seriously?
I remembered walking into an office (name withheld), all
suited up, and ready for a job interview. I got into the room, after jumping several
buses just to get to the venue, and as soon as I introduced myself, the interviewer
said to me “I am so sorry, you look too young for this position” I am like , sorry?
“you heard me right, how old are you again? I answered 20. “Thank you for coming, we want
someone older!
Trust me, I cried. Isn’t that Age discrimination? Because I look
young then I can't be employed? What happens if one just bagged a degree and sets out to the labour market at a young age?
Funny how young people will be
employed and when they try to contribute
to matters in the work place and speak
up, one staff would look down on you with so much disrespect what will be their justification? "Oh you can be
Irresponsible", "you still live in your parents house", you don’t know how to
manage resources", "you lack experience" I could go on and on.
Ageism as described by Katie Mcbeth, is stereotyping and discrimination on the basis of their age, ageism can take many forms: including prejudicial attitudes, discriminatory practices, or institutional policies and practices that perpetuates stereotypical beliefs"
This is actually eating through the interactive industry at large, and depriving employees of their rights. What is with employers and age? here is what Human rights commission of Canada has to say, and if you are reading this I recommend you click through and read to know your rights.

Now I call this bulling! it is so sad that most young workers face this kind of bullying right now in their workplace. Ageism discrimination is actually on the rise! And sorry to
those employers, you are loosing the smartest people you should have on your
team. I watched a Tech video recently and I expect you
also watch it also This is Tony Fadell taking about the first secrets of designs, where he recommends and urges you to have the young minds in your team.
I strongly recommend that you take these young minds in, nurture us! we want to work, you should help!
Pass the knowledge on and become a part of our lives in terms of becoming our reference.
Please Don't forget to add your comments below to this, lets share our experiences to teach others. and I hope you come back next week for that book review I will be posting up next, until then, see you soon! I have to go now. Do enjoy the rest of your month!

Shaftesbury reminded
me of Sidewalk Labs a center I recently visited for a networking event, and
then, I smiled. You need to look at that place up for your next event in the
city of Toronto. The first time I saw Shaftesbury's website I was immediately
glued to the well-arranged and attractive aesthetics, I also remembered the
fact that I loved anything that had to do with digital web contents, film
production and looking forward to the much talked about web series, Carmilla
and the bustle that everyone mentioned when it came to be talking about the
industries that manage web content production. But on this day, I guess I was
too busy trying to make sure I give you a good glimpse of the SHAFTESBURY
Company. Shaftesbury is only but an exciting company to work in, so don't you
think you need to stay with me a few minutes to get this gist?
Shaftesbury is owned
by Christina Jennings and is located at 18, Logan Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, in
Canada, this is a company that prides itself as a first-class creator and
producers of First-hand content and web series for television, films, digitals,
and brands. And of course, with contents like the Carmilla, 12 seasons of
Murdoch Mysteries, two seasons of detective drama Frankie Drake Mysteries for
CBC, UKTV, and Kew Media, three seasons of critically acclaimed thriller series
Slasher for Netflix. Mind you, this company is solely a service-based company,
a company that is known for innovative storytelling, and the building of
successful brands.
Shaftesbury's work
environment is one you would love to have a feel of. with about 11-50 employees, in a nicely placed, mind-blowing, opened spaces and cubicles to make you very comfortable
and satisfying.
